Stellenbosch bolster defence with Surprise Nhlabathi signing before league kick-off

Stellenbosch FC have moved to strengthen their re-shaped defence by signing highly rated defender Surprise Nhlabathi from Baroka FC on the eve of the 2026-27 Betway Premiership season.

The 20-year-old centre-back has agreed a two-year contract, which includes an option for a further year, arriving as a free agent after Baroka lost their professional status following relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.

Nhlabathi’s arrival is designed to fill the gaps in a backline that has undergone significant change during the off-season, with Thabo Moloisane, Henri Stanic and Athenkosi Mcaba all leaving the club.

Defensive rebuild under way

Mosa Lebusa is now the senior figure at the heart of Stellenbosch’s defence, and the club have already moved to add top-flight experience by bringing in Terrence Mashego on loan.

Nhlabathi, who can operate both in central defence and in midfield, is regarded as one of the more promising young players in his position and is seen as a longer-term project as well as immediate squad depth.

The deal has been completed ahead of Stellenbosch’s 2026-27 season opener, with local outlet iDiski Times confirming that all formalities have been finalised.

Rising prospect’s background

Before joining Baroka, Nhlabathi came through the ranks at the Mpumalanga School of Excellence, a well-known development institution in South African football.

He also featured for Tammy Tigers / TUT, further shaping his progression before stepping into the professional game.

At Baroka, his development stalled not through form but circumstance, as the club’s relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship last term resulted in the loss of their professional status and allowed him to move on a free transfer.

Future planning at Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch’s recruitment of Nhlabathi forms part of a broader effort to replenish and future-proof their defensive options after the exits of three senior defenders.

The club will look to blend Lebusa’s leadership and Mashego’s experience with Nhlabathi’s potential, as they aim to remain competitive in the Betway Premiership while reshaping their squad for the seasons ahead.
