Kaizer Chiefs willing to lose Given Msimango in pursuit of Langelihle Phili

Kaizer Chiefs are prepared to make a major squad sacrifice in their pursuit of Stellenbosch FC forward Langelihle Phili, with defender Given Msimango reportedly included as part of a package aimed at convincing the Cape Winelands club to release their prized attacker.

The Soweto giants have been pushing to secure Phili’s signature but have encountered resistance from Stellenbosch, who are reluctant to lose one of their key attacking assets without receiving significant value in return.

Chiefs had initially attempted to sweeten the proposed deal by offering striker Ashley du Preez alongside a financial package. However, Stellies remained firm in their demands, forcing Amakhosi to explore alternative ways of structuring the transfer.

Msimango has now emerged as another potential makeweight in the negotiations as Chiefs look to finally land a player they believe can strengthen their attacking options.

Msimango’s difficult Chiefs journey

The centre-back’s possible inclusion in the deal comes after a challenging period in Naturena colours.

Since joining Chiefs from TS Galaxy, Msimango has struggled to establish himself as a consistent starter, making just 13 league appearances last season as competition for defensive positions increased.

The arrival of Thabo Moloisane on a free transfer from Stellenbosch has further complicated his chances of securing regular playing time, with Chiefs now having greater depth in central defence.

A move away could make Msimango the latest player to leave as part of the club’s squad restructuring under coach Fernando da Cruz. He would join a list of players who have fallen out of favour, including midfielder Thabo Cele.

According to SABC Sport, Chiefs have placed Msimango at the centre of their latest attempt to negotiate a deal for Phili.

“SABC Sport has established that defender Given Msimango is one of two players Kaizer Chiefs have offered, together with a cash payment, to Stellenbosch FC in an effort to secure the signing of highly rated winger Langelihle Phili,” reads part of the report.

Why Chiefs are chasing Phili

The interest in Phili reflects Chiefs’ desire to find a reliable attacking option capable of solving their long-standing goalscoring struggles.

At only 21 years old, the Stellenbosch forward represents a potential long-term investment for Amakhosi as they continue rebuilding their squad.

Phili has shown promise during his time in the Premier Soccer League, recording 11 goals and two assists in 72 top-flight appearances. While those numbers suggest there is still room for improvement, Chiefs believe his age and potential make him a player worth pursuing.

The move would also add competition to an attacking department that currently features Flavio da Silva and Etoisa Ighodaro as the club’s main options upfront.

However, Phili is aware that a switch to Naturena would not guarantee an automatic starting role. He would have to compete for a place in Da Cruz’s plans and prove he can deliver under the pressure that comes with wearing the Chiefs jersey.
