Sharks turn to Junior Springbok quartet for Currie Cup showdown with Stormers XXIII

The Sharks XV have recalled a clutch of Junior Springbok talents as they seek to rebound from defeat in a high-stakes Currie Cup coastal derby against the Stormers XXIII in Cape Town on Saturday.

Both teams arrive at this third-round fixture with identical records of one win and one loss from their opening two matches, leaving the clash at a crucial early juncture in their campaigns.

Sharks XV head coach Mike Vowles has responded to last Friday’s narrow setback by reshaping his matchday squad and drafting back four Junior Springboks in an effort to inject greater impact and energy, particularly in the closing stages.

“They come with massive potential, they’re exciting rugby players, and we feel that including them will give us some punch in the final quarter of the game and have a really positive influence on our performance,” Vowles said.

The Sharks XV will start with Luan Gilliomee at fullback, one of the returning age-group internationals, while fellow Junior Springboks Khuthi Rasivhaga, Liam van Wyk and Phiwayinkosi “Rambo” Kubheka have been named among the replacements.

Vowles said the reshuffle was designed to align selection with the style of rugby the Sharks XV want to impose in Cape Town.

“We know the Stormers XXIII are coming off a big loss and there will be a response from them. They’ll come out fighting, so we anticipate a high-tempo, very physical match.

“But we’ve had a good week of preparation and have made some changes to the team which reflect how we want to play and how we want to finish the game.”

Sharks XV tweak selection after tight defeat

Gilliomee anchors a backline that includes Christie Grobbelaar and Lyle Matthews on the wings, with Marnus Potgieter and Janco Purchase forming the midfield pairing. Experienced fly-half Tim Swiel lines up at 10, alongside scrum-half Ross Braude.

Captain Thomas Dyer leads from number eight, supported in the back row by Danio Botha at blindside flanker and Luaan Olivier at openside. In the second row, Deon Slabbert partners Johan Momsen, with a front row of loosehead prop Cameron Dawson, hooker Bryce Calvert and tighthead prop Simphiwe Ngobese.

On the bench, front-row cover is provided by Liam van Wyk, Rambo Kubheka and Lee-Marvin Mazibuko, with Hanu Pieterse and Jean-Henri Smit offering options at lock and in the loose forwards. Juan Loots and Albie Bester cover the backline, while Rasivhaga completes the matchday 23.

Stormers XXIII look to respond after heavy loss

The Stormers XXIII, who suffered a sizeable defeat in their previous outing, will be eager to respond in front of their home supporters and revive momentum in the competition.

Fullback Dylan Miller starts at 15 for the Cape-based side, with Suleiman Hartzenberg and Mfundo Ndhlovu selected on the wings. In midfield, Markus Muller wears 13 and Josh Boulle 12, while Kyle Smith directs play from fly-half and captain Stefan Ungerer starts at scrum-half.

Up front, Wandile Mlaba packs down at number eight, flanked by Louw Nel at blindside and Keke Morabe at openside. Gary Porter and Tom Barnard form the lock pairing. The front row comprises loosehead prop Hencus van Wyk, hooker Vernon Paulo and tighthead prop Herman Lubbe.

The Stormers XXIII bench features hooker Altus Rabie and props Mhleli Khuzwayo and Danie Kruger as front-row reinforcements. Gerbrandt Grobler and Xola Nyali add depth in the second and back rows, with Ezekiel Ngobeni, Gino Cupido and Kian Davis covering the backline.
