Thapelo Maseko: South African winger at Sundowns linked with move to MC Algiers

South African right winger Thapelo Maseko of Mamelodi Sundowns is being linked with a move to Algerian giants MC Algiers as the North African club weigh up options to strengthen their attack for the new Ligue 1 campaign.

The 22-year-old, who operates primarily on the right but favours his left foot, has seen his stock rise after a successful spell with Sundowns, where his market value has climbed to around €1m. MC Algiers are monitoring the situation closely as they look to add proven continental pedigree to their squad.

Maseko returned to Sundowns at the end of June 2026 following a loan stint at Cypriot side AEL Limassol earlier in the 2025-26 season, a move that offered him experience outside South Africa before he came back into the champions’ set-up. He initially joined Sundowns from SuperSport United in July 2023.

Since arriving in Tshwane, Maseko has accumulated significant silverware. He was part of the Sundowns side crowned CAF Champions League winners in 2025-26, having already collected back-to-back South African league titles in 2023-24 and 2024-25. He also finished as top scorer in the African Football League during the 2023-24 campaign, scoring two goals as Sundowns went on to win that competition as well.

Born in Sebokeng, Gauteng, and standing at 1.78m, Maseko has become one of the notable young South African attackers with experience across domestic and continental competitions. For now, he remains under contract at Sundowns, with MC Algiers exploring the possibility of persuading the CAF Champions League holders to part with the winger.
