Hunt hopeful of keeping Phili as Kaizer Chiefs talks intensify

Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt says he wants to keep Langelihle Phili at the club but accepts “contractual circumstances” could determine the in-demand winger’s future amid strong interest from Kaizer Chiefs.

Phili, 21, has been heavily linked with a move to Amakhosi after a standout 2025-26 season, and South Africa’s public broadcaster reported on Wednesday that Chiefs had taken “a significant step” in negotiations to sign him.

The Stellies star enjoyed a breakout campaign last term, scoring nine goals in 39 appearances in all competitions, including seven strikes in the Betway Premiership, form that has made him one of the most talked-about young players in the country.

It is understood that discussions between the clubs have included the prospect of a swap arrangement involving Ashley du Preez, an additional unnamed player and a cash component, with Stellenbosch believed to value Phili at around R16 million.

Hunt: ‘You don’t want to lose him’

Speaking on Thursday at the Betway Premiership launch for the 2026-27 season, Hunt did not hide his admiration for the winger but acknowledged that off-field factors may shape the outcome.

“Obviously you don’t want to lose the player,” Hunt said when asked about Phili’s situation.

“He’s one of the hottest properties in South African football, right now. You don’t want to lose him.

“But I mean circumstances, contractual circumstances and all those type of things come into play.

“It’s been a lot of media speculation and I’m sure the next day or two we’ll hear some more…”

Hunt’s comments underline Stellenbosch’s desire to retain one of their key performers while recognising that his contractual position and the financial realities of the South African game may open the door to a transfer.

Chiefs interest and next steps

Chiefs have been monitoring Phili’s progress over an extended period and are understood to see him as a major attacking reinforcement as they rebuild ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Any deal would likely be one of the most notable domestic transfers of the South African off-season, given the size of the reported fee, the inclusion of a player such as du Preez in talks, and Phili’s rapid rise in the Betway Premiership.

Stellenbosch, for their part, face the challenge of balancing competitive ambitions with the possibility of cashing in on a player whose value has surged after his performances last season.

No agreement has been announced by either club, and with Hunt indicating further developments are expected “in the next day or two”, Phili’s immediate future remains unresolved as the new league campaign approaches.
