Patrick Vieira Senegal appointment faces major delay

Senegal’s plan to replace Pape Thiaw with Patrick Vieira is suddenly under threat because the financial side of the dismissal has not been approved.

The federation had been preparing for a change after a disappointing World Cup campaign, but the expected coaching switch now looks far less certain.

Reports say government officials do not want to pay to end Thiaw’s contract because they never formally signed off on the deal in June. That creates a costly problem for the federation, since the contract is understood to include a monthly salary of 30 million CFA francs, a signing bonus of 120 million CFA francs, and a clause giving Thiaw one percent of Senegal’s FIFA prize money.

On top of that, removing him would require compensation equal to eight months of salary. Unless the federation finds another way to cover the bill, or negotiates a separate solution, Vieira’s expected arrival could collapse completely.

For now, Thiaw remains in position and Senegal’s next coaching step is on hold. What seemed like a clean transition has turned into a budget dispute that could decide who leads the national team next.
