WAFCON 2026: Jorge Vilda confident Morocco are ready for crucial Algeria showdown

Morocco women’s national team coach Jorge Vilda believes the Atlas Lionesses are fully prepared for Thursday’s crucial Group A meeting with Algeria as they bid to move closer to the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The hosts opened their campaign with victory and know another three points would put them in a strong position to reach the knockout stages.

Speaking ahead of the match, Vilda said his players had already put their opening win behind them and were focused entirely on the challenge posed by their North African rivals.

“The first match is behind us,” Vilda said.

“What matters now is the performance we deliver on the pitch.”

Vilda expects stern Algeria challenge

The Spanish coach warned that Morocco will face a disciplined and well-organised Algeria side capable of causing problems at both ends of the pitch.

While praising Algeria’s defensive structure, Vilda also highlighted their growing attacking threat, particularly on the counterattack and from set-piece situations.

He said Morocco would need to produce one of their strongest performances of the tournament to secure victory.

Full squad available for selection

Vilda also revealed that all 26 members of his squad are fit and available, giving him a full complement of players to choose from for the decisive fixture.

Despite Algeria’s reputation for defensive organisation, the Morocco coach expects an open and competitive contest rather than a match dominated by cautious football.

He also praised the atmosphere within the Atlas Lionesses camp, describing the squad as united and motivated as they pursue a place in the last eight.

Home support could prove decisive

The coach concluded by urging Moroccan supporters to once again fill the stands in Rabat, believing the backing of the home crowd could provide a significant advantage.

With qualification for the quarter-finals within reach, Morocco will be aiming to make home advantage count as they seek another important victory in their WAFCON campaign.
