Thapelo Mokobodi: South African midfielder joins Orlando Pirates from Stellenbosch FC
Orlando Pirates have added South African midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi to their squad after the 23-year-old completed a move from Stellenbosch FC. The central midfielder joins the Soweto club from their Betway Premiership rivals and has signed a contract until 30 June 2029.
Mokobodi, a right-footed central midfielder, arrives at Pirates on the back of consistent top-flight experience with Stellenbosch. He featured regularly across league and cup competitions, making 38 Premiership appearances and adding further game time in the CAF Confederation Cup, Nedbank Cup, Carling Knockout and MTN8 for the Western Cape side.
Born on 11 November 2002, Mokobodi has established himself in South Africa’s top division over the past few seasons. He first moved into the Premiership with Marumo in 2023 before switching to Stellenbosch in August 2025, where he accumulated more than 2,200 minutes in all competitions.
The midfielder’s move continues a rapid rise, with his current market valuation at around €125,000 at the time of the transfer. His performances in domestic competition and on the continental stage with Stellenbosch have provided the platform for his step up to one of the country’s most prominent clubs.
Mokobodi’s switch from Stellenbosch FC to Orlando Pirates is effective immediately, with his deal tying him to the Buccaneers through the 2028-29 season.
