Kevin Akpoguma set for Frosinone move as Nigeria defender arrives in Italy for medical

Nigeria international defender Kevin Akpoguma is set to begin a new chapter in his career after arriving in Italy on Wednesday to undergo a medical ahead of his move to newly promoted Serie A side Frosinone.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the flight arrangements have been finalized and the experienced defender is expected to complete the formalities of his transfer before signing his contract with the Italian club later today.

Akpoguma joins Frosinone as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with German Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim on June 30, bringing an end to a decade-long association with the club.

The versatile defender, who turned 31 in April, is capable of operating as a central defender, right-back, or left-back, a quality that makes him a valuable addition to any squad.

His time at Hoffenheim began in 2013, although he also spent loan spells at Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hannover 96 during his career. He leaves Germany with extensive Bundesliga experience, having made 179 appearances in the competition while contributing three goals and five assists.

Born in Germany, Akpoguma represented the country at various youth levels before switching his international allegiance to Nigeria in October 2020. The Frosinone move will mark his first professional club experience outside Germany.

The defender is reportedly hoping that regular first-team football in Serie A will boost his chances of returning to the Nigeria national team setup as the Super Eagles prepare for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations campaign.
