Tunisia appoint Moïne Chaâbani as head coach on a four-year deal

Tunisia have appointed Moïne Chaâbani as their new head coach on a four-year contract following the Carthage Eagles’ disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Tunisian Football Federation confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, announcing that the 44-year-old will lead the national team through to the 2030 World Cup.

World Cup disappointment prompts change

Tunisia endured a difficult campaign at the 2026 World Cup, losing all three of their group-stage matches to crash out of the tournament.

The Carthage Eagles opened with a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden before suffering a 4-0 loss to Japan. They completed a winless campaign with a 3-1 defeat against the Netherlands.

Sabri Lamouchi took charge of Tunisia’s opening match but was dismissed after the defeat to Sweden. Former France coach Hervé Renard was appointed in an attempt to revive the team’s fortunes, but he also failed to halt the slide, overseeing the final two group games before leaving his position.

Four-year contract confirmed

The Tunisian Football Federation announced that Chaâbani has signed a deal running until the 2030 World Cup.

His backroom staff will include assistant coaches Mourad Maliki and Saif Allah Hosni, goalkeeping coach Khaled Maghzaoui, fitness coach Hatem Bouleila and performance analyst Wissam Safwat.

Decorated coach takes charge

Chaâbani arrives with an impressive coaching record, having enjoyed success in both Tunisian and African club football.

He guided Espérance de Tunis to back-to-back CAF Champions League titles in 2018 and 2019 before leading Morocco’s Renaissance Berkane to the CAF Confederation Cup crown in 2025.

Tunisia will now look to the experienced tactician to rebuild the national team and restore confidence after a disappointing World Cup campaign, with qualification for the 2030 tournament among the federation’s long-term objectives.
