Morocco’s Ouaddou makes history with South African Coach of the Season award

Former Morocco international Abdeslam Ouaddou has become the first Moroccan coach to be named South Africa’s Premiership Coach of the Season after steering Orlando Pirates to the 2025-26 league title.

The 46-year-old earned the prestigious accolade following a remarkable first season in charge of the Johannesburg club, guiding Pirates to the championship after taking over at the start of the campaign and ending Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance of South African football.

Landmark season for Moroccan coach

Ouaddou’s title-winning campaign was also marked by a record-breaking achievement, as he became the first coach in Premier Soccer League history to oversee a run of 11 consecutive home victories across all competitions in a single season.

His success represents another milestone for Moroccan football, making him the first manager from the North African nation to receive South Africa’s highest individual coaching honour.

Ouaddou pays tribute to his players

Speaking after collecting the award, the former Morocco defender credited his squad for the achievement and insisted the recognition belonged to the entire team.

“Without the players, the coach is nothing,” he said. “I thank my team, and I look forward to achieving even more success next season.”

Rising reputation across Africa

Ouaddou, who enjoyed an international career with Morocco before moving into management, continues to establish himself as one of Africa’s emerging coaching talents.

His achievements with Orlando Pirates are expected to further enhance the growing reputation of Moroccan coaches across African football, following a season that delivered both domestic silverware and a place in the South African record books.
