Mpho Mvelase urges Seluleko Mahlambi to stay patient amid rising transfer interest

TS Galaxy midfielder Mpho Mvelase has urged highly rated youngster Seluleko Mahlambi to remain patient and focused on his football as interest grows in the winger ahead of the new season.

Mvelase, one of Galaxy’s longest-serving players and a senior figure in the dressing room, has been mentoring Mahlambi, who was one of the standout performers for the Rockets last term. The 21-year-old’s breakthrough campaign was capped on Monday when he collected the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player Award at the PSL Awards ceremony in Randburg.

The former Orlando Pirates utility man revealed he would not be surprised if Mahlambi’s rapid progress resulted in a move away from Galaxy, with several PSL clubs reported to be monitoring the player.

“I told him that before we closed that I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t come back (to Galaxy this coming season),” said Mvelase.

Managing expectations

While speculation continues over Mahlambi’s future, Mvelase is wary of transfer talk unsettling the young attacker and has consistently encouraged him to keep his attention on performing for Galaxy.

“I don’t want to talk about these things because they tend to disrupt the players a bit. I always tell him that ‘there is still January to come, maybe you may not leave now, but just think that there is still five or six months that I need to play’,” he explained.

According to Mvelase, Mahlambi has responded positively to that guidance and carried his form from last season into Galaxy’s pre-season schedule.

“He is taking that.

“In friendly games, he has assisted and has scored goals. That’s what he does even during league games. So, I am happy for him, I am happy there are teams after his services and I wish God to provide opportunities for him to achieve his dream in football,” added the dreadlocked veteran.

Rockets prepare for league opener

TS Galaxy are now turning their attention to the start of the Betway Premiership campaign, with a trip to Bloemfontein to face Siwelele FC on Sunday in their opening fixture.

Mvelase, who has taken on a dual responsibility as both senior player and dressing-room leader, will again be central to head coach Sead Ramovic’s plans as Galaxy look to build on last season’s progress.

Mahlambi, fresh from his individual recognition at the PSL Awards, is expected to be a key attacking outlet for the Rockets as they begin their league programme, even as speculation over his long-term future continues.

For now, Mvelase’s message to the youngster remains clear: embrace the interest, but let performances on the pitch dictate what comes next.
