Ghana target win in WAFCON 2026 opener against Cape Verde

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has expressed confidence that Ghana can begin their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign on a winning note when they face tournament debutants Cape Verde.

The Black Queens will take on Cape Verde in their opening Group stage fixture on Wednesday, July 29, at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, with kick-off scheduled for 7:00 pm.

Ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, the Swedish tactician revealed that the team has made significant progress during their training camp and is fully prepared for the challenge ahead.

“We have been in camp for some weeks, and we have improved our fitness level, and we are feeling we are ready for the upcoming game,” Bjorkegren said.

Despite expecting a difficult contest against the newcomers, the Ghana coach remains optimistic that his players have what it takes to secure all three points.

“We expect a tough game, but we believe in ourselves, and if we do our things, we can start the tournament with a win. At least that’s our goal and target,” he added.

Ghana will be aiming for a positive start as they seek to make a strong impression at the continental tournament and boost their hopes of progressing beyond the group stage.

The Black Queens are also targeting qualification for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, having last featured on the global stage at the 2007 edition.
