WAFCON 2026: We’re here to defend the title – Nigeria’s Super Falcons coach Justine Madugu

Nigeria head coach Justine Madugu has declared the Super Falcons fully prepared to begin their quest for a record-extending 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, insisting his side will approach every match with focus and respect as they open their 2026 campaign against Malawi.

The defending champions will kick off their title defence against tournament debutants Malawi at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday, with the Super Falcons aiming to make an early statement in their pursuit of yet another continental crown.

Having established themselves as the most successful team in the history of African women’s football, Nigeria arrive in Morocco as favourites once again. However, Madugu believes there are no easy matches at this level and expects a fiercely competitive tournament.

The Nigerian tactician acknowledged the quality of every nation that qualified for the finals, stressing that reaching the continental showpiece is an achievement that deserves recognition.

“We have huge respect for all our opponents. Every team that qualifies for this tournament deserves commendation and a lot of respect,” Madugu said.

Despite Malawi making their first-ever appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Falcons coach insisted his team will not take the Scorchers lightly.

He noted that every participating nation has travelled to Morocco with ambition and determination, making it essential for Nigeria to remain fully focused from the opening whistle.

“We are here for the defence of the WAFCON trophy and the team is fully ready and set to go. We will stick to our game plan and our mission,” he added.

Madugu’s comments reflect Nigeria’s determination to maintain their dominance in African women’s football while avoiding the complacency that can often accompany the status of defending champions.

The Super Falcons boast an unrivalled record in the competition, having lifted the trophy on ten previous occasions, and another triumph would further cement their position as the continent’s most successful women’s national team.

Nigeria head into the tournament with a squad blending experienced internationals and emerging talents, giving Madugu confidence that his side has the quality and depth required to navigate a demanding championship.

A positive result against Malawi would provide the Super Falcons with the ideal platform for the rest of their Group C campaign as they seek to retain the title and continue their remarkable legacy on the African stage.

Elsewhere in Group C, Zambia’s Copper Queens will face Egypt in another highly anticipated fixture, with both nations also hoping to make a strong start in the race for a place in the knockout rounds.

The clash between Nigeria and Malawi is scheduled to kick off at 9:00 pm Nigerian time, with the Super Falcons eager to begin their title defence with all three points and reaffirm their credentials as the team to beat at the 2026 WAFCON.
