Rulani Mokwena embraces pressure as he begins Pyramids FC rebuild

Pyramids FC head coach Rulani Mokwena has welcomed the pressure that comes with leading one of Egypt’s ambitious clubs, insisting that high expectations are part of the responsibility of taking on elite football jobs.

The South African coach recently began his new role with the Egyptian Premier League side after leaving Libyan club Al Ittihad, as he prepares for the 2026/27 season.

Mokwena inherits a Pyramids FC team that made history by winning the 2025 CAF Champions League and will now be tasked with maintaining the club’s upward trajectory both domestically and on the African stage.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach acknowledged that expectations will be demanding but believes such challenges are necessary for growth and success.

“It’s an incredible motivation. Of course, the pressure is there, but if you don’t want the pressure, you don’t take these type of jobs,” Mokwena said on MSW.

“It’s the pressure to continue to develop the players, the pressure to continue to develop the team in a way where the team can develop into the profile of a very, very big team.”

Mokwena revealed that he has held continuous discussions with the club’s leadership about developing a playing philosophy that combines attractive football with positive results.

“We had discussions consistently with the club about how we want to try to develop the playing style to relate to the results so that we can increase the audience and the number of followers that the club has,” he added.

The tactician believes Pyramids’ CAF Champions League final appearance was evidence of the club’s growing stature, highlighting the strong support shown by fans during the historic occasion.

“The Champions League final was a direct indication that the club is moving in a good direction because the stadium was full to capacity.”

Mokwena says his long-term vision is to help transform Pyramids FC into a recognised football brand, built not only on trophies but also on identity, style and consistent performances.

“This is what we’re trying to do – to develop the club into a brand that is not only synonymous with success in terms of trophies, but also through its style of play and performances on the pitch.”
