Faouzi Benzarti explains Club Africain exit, cites unpaid dues and squad decisions

Veteran Tunisian coach Faouzi Benzarti has opened up on his decision to leave Club Africain after taking charge of Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad, insisting that financial commitments and disagreements over the club’s sporting direction influenced his departure.

Benzarti, one of the most experienced coaches in North African football, said he had the right to demand the money owed to him and protect his personal interests, dismissing any suggestion that his decision was motivated solely by financial gain.

“I don’t own buildings or properties. I have every right to fight for my financial dues and protect my interests. I want to leave something behind for my children,” Benzarti said.

The 75-year-old tactician claimed Club Africain failed to fulfill its financial obligations, including paying his salary through the end of the season and a promised bonus linked to winning the league title.

“Club Africain’s management failed to honor its financial commitments, including my salary until the end of the season and the league title bonus,” he added.

Benzarti also revealed that he had advised the club’s hierarchy to maintain the core of the squad and make targeted reinforcements ahead of the new campaign. However, he expressed disappointment that the opposite approach was taken.

“I asked the club to keep the core of the squad and strengthen it, but the opposite happened. I cannot take responsibility for a setback caused by decisions that were not mine,” he stated.

The experienced coach’s departure comes after a brief spell with Club Africain, where expectations were high due to his reputation and history of success in Tunisian football. His move to Al-Ittihad marks another chapter in a coaching career that has included several major clubs across Tunisia, Morocco and the wider Arab region.

Benzarti’s comments are expected to fuel further debate around Club Africain’s management and financial stability, with the coach making it clear that he does not want to be held accountable for challenges he believes were created by decisions beyond his control.
