Egypt goalkeeper Abou Gabal closes in on historic move to Morocco

Egypt international goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal is on the verge of completing his first move outside his homeland after reaching an initial agreement to join Moroccan side Hassania Agadir.

According to reports in Morocco, negotiations between the two parties are progressing well, with only the final details and the formal signing of contracts remaining before the transfer can be completed.

If the deal goes through, Abou Gabal will become the first Egyptian goalkeeper to play in Morocco’s top-flight professional league.

Hassania seek experienced replacement

Hassania Agadir have stepped up their pursuit of the 36-year-old following the departure of first-choice goalkeeper Badr Eddine Abaïr, whose contract with the club has expired.

The Moroccan outfit are understood to be targeting an experienced international goalkeeper to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season, with Abou Gabal emerging as their preferred choice.

Experienced Pharaohs international

Abou Gabal has enjoyed a successful career in Egyptian football, representing clubs including Zamalek, National Bank, Smouha and Modern Sport.

He has also earned 14 caps for the Egyptian national team and rose to prominence during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, played in early 2022, where his outstanding performances helped the Pharaohs reach the final.

A move to Hassania Agadir would mark a new chapter in the goalkeeper’s career while also creating a piece of history for Egyptian football, with no Egyptian goalkeeper having previously featured in Morocco’s top division.
