‘He’s a legend’ – Benzema reacts to Zidane’s expected France appointment

Former France striker Karim Benzema has welcomed the expected appointment of Zinedine Zidane as head coach of the French national team, describing the football icon as “a legend” and expressing his delight at the prospect of his former Real Madrid manager taking charge.

The French Football Federation is expected to officially unveil Zidane as Didier Deschamps’ successor during a press conference on Tuesday, ending months of speculation over who would lead Les Bleus into a new era.

Speaking to Konbini during its “Stay or Leave” segment, Benzema was asked about Zidane’s anticipated appointment and offered his full backing for the former France captain.

“He’s a legend, he’s like an older brother to me. Am I happy that he’s coaching the French national team? I don’t know if it’s him, but if it is, I’m very happy.”

Questions remain over Benzema’s international future

Benzema enjoyed some of the most successful years of his club career under Zidane at Real Madrid, where the pair helped the Spanish giants win multiple major trophies, including three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles.

With Zidane now expected to begin a new chapter with France, attention has also turned to whether the veteran forward could make an international return.

The 38-year-old continues to perform at a high level in club football, but any potential recall would depend on Zidane’s plans and the competition for places in France’s attack.
