Iraq focused on Graham Arnold contract talks despite Walid Regragui links

he Iraqi Football Federation has dismissed suggestions that Walid Regragui is close to becoming the country’s next national team coach, insisting that its immediate priority is to reach an agreement on a contract extension with current manager Graham Arnold.

Speculation over Regragui’s future intensified after reports claimed the former Morocco coach was among the leading candidates to take charge of Iraq.

However, federation official Ali Jallal has made it clear that discussions remain focused on retaining Arnold, with negotiations continuing in a positive direction.

Jallal said the federation remains optimistic that an agreement can be reached with the Australian coach, who continues to be the preferred choice.

“Negotiations are still ongoing and progressing well. If they do not succeed, we will naturally consider other options,” said Ali Jallal.

His comments came after Iraqi television channel Al Rabiaa Sports reported on Sunday that Regragui was one of the main alternatives being considered should talks with Arnold fail to produce an agreement.

While Jallal did not confirm whether the federation has made contact with the Moroccan coach, he acknowledged that a range of candidates would be assessed if a change became necessary.

He also praised the reputation of Moroccan coaching, suggesting that managers from the country possess qualities worthy of consideration, without indicating that Regragui had been approached or was in advanced discussions.

For now, Iraq’s attention remains firmly on securing Arnold’s future, with negotiations between both parties still underway.

Regragui, meanwhile, has been without a coaching role since leaving his position with Morocco’s Atlas Lions in March 2026.

Since then, the highly regarded coach has been linked with several international vacancies, including Ecuador, although none of those reported interests has resulted in an appointment.

As contract talks with Arnold continue, the possibility of Regragui becoming Iraq’s next head coach remains speculative.

Unless negotiations break down, the federation’s efforts will remain directed towards extending the Australian’s stay, leaving any pursuit of alternative candidates on hold.
