Retired Ahmed Hegazi set to begin new chapter with Neom

Former Egypt defender Ahmed Hegazi is poised to remain in Saudi Arabian football after retiring from professional football, with reports linking him to an administrative role at Saudi Pro League newcomers Neom.

The 35-year-old announced his retirement on Saturday following the end of his spell with Neom, bringing the curtain down on a distinguished career that spanned clubs in Egypt, Italy, England and Saudi Arabia.

According to Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, Neom intend to retain Hegazi by offering him a position within the club’s administrative structure as part of an ongoing overhaul ahead of the new season.

New chapter after retirement

While the club has yet to reveal the exact nature of the role, an announcement is expected in the coming days as Neom continues restructuring both its administrative and technical departments.

The move would allow the former Egypt international to remain involved with the club after helping guide it to promotion to the Saudi Pro League.

Successful spell in Saudi Arabia

Hegazi joined Neom in the summer of 2024 and played an important role in the club’s successful campaign that ended with the Yellow First Division League title and promotion to the top flight.

He departed following the conclusion of last season, before confirming his retirement from playing.

Before joining Neom, Hegazi enjoyed a highly successful four-year spell with Al-Ittihad, where he became one of the club’s key figures.

The Egyptian centre-back helped Al-Ittihad win the Saudi Pro League title in 2023, ending the club’s 14-year wait for the championship, and also lifted the Saudi Super Cup before leaving in 2024.

Career spanning four countries

Hegazi retires after a career that took him across Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

The defender represented Egyptian clubs Ismaily and Al Ahly before moving to Italy, where he played for Fiorentina and Perugia. He later featured for English side West Bromwich Albion before continuing his career in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad and Neom.

His expected transition into an administrative role would mark the beginning of a new chapter for one of Egypt’s most accomplished defenders, allowing him to continue contributing to Saudi football beyond his playing days.
