Ferdinand backs Morocco’s Noussair Mazraoui to start for Manchester United next season

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes Morocco international Noussair Mazraoui should begin the 2026-27 Premier League season as the club’s first-choice right-back ahead of Diogo Dalot.

The former England defender said Mazraoui’s impressive displays at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have earned him the opportunity to start under new United manager Michael Carrick, insisting the defender has returned to club football in outstanding form.

Speaking on his Rio Presents podcast, Ferdinand left little doubt over who he would select if he were in charge at Old Trafford.

“If I were Michael Carrick, I would start Noussair Mazraoui ahead of Diogo Dalot. It’s as simple as that.”

World Cup displays strengthen Mazraoui’s case

Ferdinand believes the Morocco international has benefited significantly from his performances on football’s biggest stage, arguing that major tournaments often provide players with renewed confidence heading into the club season.

“Mazraoui came back from the World Cup in the best form of his career. He’s full of confidence and playing with great rhythm. Major tournaments often give players a huge boost, and smart coaches know how to take advantage of that,” he explained.

The former United defender also highlighted the qualities he believes make Mazraoui an ideal fit for Carrick’s style of play, particularly if the club aims to dominate possession.

“What I like about Mazraoui is how calm he is on the ball. He’s comfortable under pressure, plays well in tight spaces, and knows when to move inside and when to stay wide. If Carrick wants Manchester United to dominate possession, those qualities are extremely important,” he said.

Competition for places

While Ferdinand acknowledged Dalot’s consistency over recent seasons, he stressed that every player should have to earn their place in the starting line-up.

“Dalot is a very good player and has been reliable for Manchester United, but football is about form and competition. No one’s place should be guaranteed,” he added.

Ferdinand concluded that Mazraoui has done enough to merit a starting berth and believes the Moroccan could become one of Manchester United’s most influential players if he maintains the standards he showed during the World Cup.
