Man United handed Manu Kone deadline as Roma grow frustrated over delayed transfer
Manchester United have reportedly been put on a transfer clock by Roma as the Italian club wait for progress on a potential deal for French midfielder Manu Kone.
The 25-year-old has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after midfielders after an impressive World Cup campaign with France, attracting strong interest from United as Michael Carrick continues his plans to reshape the club’s midfield options.
Carrick has already moved quickly in the transfer market, securing the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans in deals worth a combined £85 million. However, unlike those completed signings, negotiations for Kone have stalled, leaving Roma increasingly concerned about the situation.
According to Corriere dello Sport, via Sport Witness, the Serie A side are becoming restless and want clarity over whether United intend to make a formal move for the midfielder.
Roma need Kone sale before UEFA deadline
Roma’s urgency is not only driven by transfer planning but also by financial concerns.
The Italian club are under pressure to complete a sale before July 31 to avoid possible punishment from UEFA. Roma are currently operating under a settlement agreement with European football’s governing body, which requires them to keep their losses below €60 million (£51.25m).
Kone’s potential departure could provide significant financial relief, with the midfielder’s market value estimated between £43 million and £51 million.
United’s interest comes at a time when Carrick is prioritising a major rebuild in the middle of the pitch. The club have already strengthened with Santos and Tielemans, but Kone is viewed as a player who can add physicality, energy and defensive quality to the squad.
Man United face pressure to act
While United have shown they can move decisively in the market, the delay over Kone’s transfer has opened the door for uncertainty.
Roma are keen to avoid entering the final stages of the window without resolving the midfielder’s future, particularly given their financial obligations. The Serie A club are now waiting for United to accelerate talks or risk seeing the opportunity become complicated.
Kone’s performances on the international stage have only increased his value, and United are not expected to be the only club monitoring his situation.
