Shadrach Ogie: Irish-Nigerian defender joins Woking on free transfer from Gillingham

Irish-Nigerian centre-back Shadrach Ogie has joined Woking on a free transfer from Gillingham, signing a deal with the National League club until 30 June 2028.

The 24-year-old, born in Limerick and standing at 1.85m, moves after a substantial spell in the English Football League, where he accumulated 128 League Two appearances. A left-footed central defender, Ogie adds significant experience to Woking’s back line as they prepare for the new campaign.

Ogie’s contract at Gillingham has come to an end, allowing Woking to secure his services without a fee. His arrival is underpinned by a consistent record of game time, with more than 9,600 minutes played in League Two alone and further outings in the EFL Trophy, FA Cup and EFL Cup.

At Gillingham, and previously in the fourth tier, Ogie built a reputation for availability and durability rather than goals, scoring once and providing two assists in League Two. He has also featured 37 times in the National League earlier in his career, scoring twice, giving him prior experience of the division he now re-enters.

Ogie already has silverware on his CV, having been part of a Leyton Orient side that claimed the League Two title in the 2022-23 season. That championship-winning campaign added to his profile as a reliable defensive option in the lower divisions.

The defender’s move to Woking is confirmed as a permanent free transfer, with his contract running through to the summer of 2028.
