Durban City sign South African left-back John Mokone from Magesi FC
South African defender John Mokone has joined Durban City FC from Magesi FC as the Betway Premiership side strengthens its options at left-back ahead of the new campaign.
The 27-year-old, a left-footed specialist in the position, makes the switch after building a solid reputation with Magesi, where he became a regular in South Africa’s top-flight and domestic cup competitions. The move was completed on 24 July 2026, with Mokone now linking up with his new team-mates in Durban.
Mokone arrives at Durban City with a growing profile in the local game and a market valuation of €350,000. He first signed for Magesi FC in 2023 and has since accumulated nearly 60 senior appearances across league and cup competitions, showing durability and consistency at the back.
In the Betway Premiership, Mokone has featured 47 times, scoring twice and providing four assists, while adding further experience in the Carling Knockout, Nedbank Cup and promotion-relegation play-offs. His minutes on the pitch – close to 5,000 in all competitions during his time at Magesi – underline his status as a regular starter rather than a squad player.
The left-back also brings trophy-winning experience, having lifted the South African cup in the 2024-25 season with Magesi FC. That success adds a competitive edge to his profile as Durban City look to navigate league and cup campaigns.
Born on 18 May 1999, Mokone now begins a new chapter at Durban City FC, joining the Betway Premiership club as a first-team defensive addition.
