‘Win over the fans with beautiful football’ – Otto Addo reveals the mission behind Ghana’s World Cup qualification

Former Ghana head coach Otto Addo has revealed that his primary tactical objective during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers was to win back disgruntled supporters by implementing an attractive, dominant style of play following the country’s historic failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Black Stars faced immense public backlash after missing out on the regional tournament for the first time in 21 years. 

In response to the crisis, Addo sought a complete tactical and philosophical shift to restore national pride and mend relationships with fans.

“I told the guys, that’s my goal, that we first of all win over the fans, that we play good football,” Addo told German football outlet 11Freunde when explaining his approach. 

“We had more ball possession, we had very good positional play… and had played good pressing so that we were much more dominant, especially in the first leg, and have really done it very, very well.”

While the progressive, high-pressing blueprint successfully secured World Cup qualification, it was not enough to save Addo’s job. 

Poor performances during international friendly matches that resulted in four consecutive defeats led to his sudden sacking on March 31, 2026, just 72 days before the world tournament.
