Newcastle sign Monaco’s Aladji Bamba on five-year deal to bolster midfield options

Newcastle United have completed the signing of French midfielder Aladji Bamba from Monaco on a five-year contract, as Eddie Howe moves to strengthen his midfield following the departure of Sandro Tonali.

Bamba, 20, who has been shortlisted for the European Young Player of the Year award, will wear the number 8 shirt at St James’ Park. He becomes Newcastle’s fourth signing of the summer after Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure and Shane Steer.

The France youth international joins as a direct response to the exit of Tonali, who has joined Tottenham Hotspur in a €108m move.

“I’m very happy to be here, it’s a new challenge and I’m eager to start my journey,” Bamba told the club’s official website. “I felt really excited when I found out Newcastle were interested in signing me.”

The midfielder added: “I know the history of the club, I’ve already visited the stadium and it’s amazing. I can’t wait to play on that pitch and I hope to have great times with the fans.”

Eddie Howe: ‘He adds depth and variety’

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said Bamba’s arrival would broaden his tactical options in the middle of the pitch.

“Aladji adds depth and variety to our midfield options, and he has huge potential to develop,” Howe said. “His progress since joining Monaco has been really impressive and we believe we can help him build on that.”

Bamba, who describes himself as relishing the step up, is looking forward to testing himself in England.

He continued: “I’m excited to test myself in a new league, which is the biggest league in the world. I learned a lot last season and now I feel ready for this new opportunity. I will give my all for this club.”

From Monaco prospect to Premier League move

Bamba joined Monaco in 2021 and made his competitive first-team debut for the Ligue 1 club in 2024.

Last season he featured 25 times for Monaco in all competitions, including five appearances in the Champions League, underlining his growing importance at the Stade Louis-II.

Newcastle, widely known in Arabic coverage by the nickname “the city’s armies”, have been reshaping their squad this summer, with Bamba viewed as a long-term part of their midfield rebuild following Tonali’s high-profile switch to Tottenham.

The move to Tyneside offers Bamba a first experience of English football and a platform to build on the promise that has put him among Europe’s most highly regarded young midfielders.
