Klopp calls Germany role ‘special honour’ and pledges brave decisions to revive Mannschaft

Jurgen Klopp has described taking charge of Germany as the peak of his coaching career and promised he will not shy away from bold calls as he begins his tenure as national team manager.

Speaking at his first press conference since replacing Julian Nagelsmann, who left the role after Germany’s failure at the 2026 World Cup, Klopp set out an ambitious vision for restoring the team to trophy-winning form, while insisting there will be no quick fixes.

Klopp, who has taken over a squad still searching for consistency on the biggest stage, said leading the four-time world champions carried a weight he had long understood from afar – but which now feels very different from the inside.

“It is a great honour to sit here today,” he said. “What has happened to me in the last few days is like a film playing in my mind, with all the thoughts crowding in. Where did all this start? Where did I come from?”

He continued: “I already knew how huge the task of coaching the national team is, but when you actually become responsible for it you feel its size and responsibility even more. Given my background, it was impossible for me to imagine reaching this stage.”

Clear identity and patience

Klopp stressed that his priority is to build a side with a recognisable style and mental strength, rather than chase instant results at any cost.

He warned that expectations will need to be managed in the early stages of his spell in charge, saying that turning Germany into a sustained contender again will take time and continuity.

Success, he made clear, will be measured by whether Germany can re-establish a clear identity on the pitch and a strong collective character – qualities he believes are essential if the team is to return to major finals.

He said he is ready to take difficult decisions, both in selection and strategy, if they are in the long-term interests of the national side, and indicated supporters should be prepared for unexpected moves as he reshapes the squad.

Relationship with fans and players

Klopp devoted a significant part of his opening remarks to his bond with the German public and to the dynamic he wants with his players.

He underlined that he sees the national team as belonging to the country rather than to any individual coach, and that reconnecting the Mannschaft with its supporters will be central to his work.

While he did not outline specific tactical systems or name individual players, he made it clear that character, commitment and a willingness to embrace his ideas will be non-negotiable for anyone hoping to be part of his plans.

“This is a very special day for me, and I want to thank everyone who helped make it happen,” he said. “But I am not a blank page – I have come here with partners, and I am not doing this for myself.”

Klopp also suggested that his long experience at club level, and his previous dealings with many of Germany’s leading players, would help him introduce his methods more smoothly, even as he adapts to the rhythms and demands of international football.

New era after World Cup disappointment

Nagelsmann’s departure, following Germany’s disappointment at the 2026 World Cup, has left Klopp with the task of rebuilding confidence as well as results.

Although he did not dwell on the specifics of that campaign, Klopp repeatedly referenced the need to move the team forward and to give Germany a side that can once again compete seriously for major honours.

He insisted he does not fear the scrutiny or the possibility that his tenure could end abruptly if results do not come quickly, arguing that the scale of the job is precisely what motivates him.

Klopp’s early statements set a tone of realism mixed with ambition: there will be no promises of overnight transformation, but there is a clear pledge to shape a Germany team with a defined way of playing, a strong sense of purpose – and a willingness from its new coach to make tough choices in pursuit of success.
