Musona set for emotional Kaizer Chiefs reunion in Toyota Cup clash

Knowledge Musona will face Kaizer Chiefs for the first time since leaving the club, as the former fan favourite returns to South Africa with Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC for this weekend’s Toyota Cup fixture.

Chiefs, preparing for a demanding 2026/27 campaign that includes the CAF Confederation Cup, Betway Premiership, MTN8, Carling KnockOut, and Nedbank Cup, will use the match as a key part of their pre-season build-up. For Scottland, the game comes amid their push to retain the Zimbabwean league title and ahead of their participation in the 2026/27 CAF Champions League.

Musona, who made his name at Chiefs as a prolific young forward, is expected to command much of the attention at the Toyota Cup, given the lasting impact he left during his time in Naturena.

Star power in Scottland squad

Scottland have travelled with a squad rich in South African football experience. Alongside Musona is his brother Walter, as well as former Chiefs forward Khama Billiat, adding extra intrigue to the meeting with AmaKhosi.

Those reservations did not last long. Musona quickly turned sceptics into admirers, particularly in his second season, when he scored 20 goals in all competitions and established himself as one of the most feared attackers in the league.

He developed a reputation for scoring a wide variety of goals – from overhead kicks and towering headers to precise free-kicks, close-range tap-ins and powerful finishes from difficult angles. That versatility and unpredictability made him a constant problem for defenders and cemented his status as a crowd favourite.

European move and brief Chiefs return

After two highly productive years at Chiefs, Musona earned a move to Europe when he was sold to German club Hoffenheim. His departure marked the end of a memorable first spell in South Africa, but he would later return to Naturena on loan for the 2013/14 season.

That second stint proved he had lost none of his cutting edge. Musona scored 16 goals in all competitions during the campaign, again playing a central role in the Chiefs attack and reinforcing the bond he had built with the club’s supporters.

Legacy still lingers 12 years on

It has been 12 years since Musona last pulled on a Kaizer Chiefs shirt, yet his name continues to resonate with those who shared a pitch with him – both team-mates and opponents alike.

His performances across his two spells in Johannesburg left a strong imprint on the club’s recent history, and his return in opposition colours with Scottland ensures an added emotional layer to an already appealing Toyota Cup encounter.

While Chiefs use the match to fine-tune their preparations for domestic and continental duties, and Scottland look to sharpen up ahead of defending their title and entering the CAF Champions League, much of the spotlight will inevitably fall on the former AmaKhosi star now lining up against his old club.
