Newcastle sign French-Guinean midfielder Aladji Bamba from Monaco in €35.5m deal

Newcastle have signed France-Guinea defensive midfielder Aladji Bamba from Monaco in a €35.5 million transfer. The 20-year-old has agreed a five-year contract at St James’ Park, running until 30 June 2031, after leaving the Ligue 1 side he joined as a teenager.

Bamba, born in Blois and standing at 1.81m, moves to the Premier League after progressing through Monaco’s youth system and into the first team. He operates primarily as a defensive midfielder and is right-footed, adding specialist cover in front of the back four for Newcastle.

The move continues a rapid rise for Bamba, who first left hometown club Blois 41’s youth ranks for AS Monaco’s academy in 2021. He advanced from Monaco’s U17s to their U19s and then to the senior squad, completing each step with a permanent promotion rather than a loan spell.

During his time in Monaco’s youth set-up, Bamba won the French Youth Cup in the 2022-23 season with the club’s U19 side, securing his first major honour at academy level. His development there contributed to his current market valuation of €18m, with Newcastle paying a significant premium to secure his services.

Eligible to represent both France and Guinea, Bamba’s arrival adds a young, physically capable midfield option to Newcastle’s squad as they prepare for the new campaign. The deal is a straight permanent transfer, with Bamba leaving Monaco to join Newcastle on a long-term contract until 2031.
