Jordaan angrily denies Broos contract extension as SAFA weigh Bafana decision

SAFA president Danny Jordaan has forcefully rejected claims that Hugo Broos has been handed a new one-year deal to stay on as Bafana Bafana head coach, insisting the Belgian’s future has not yet been decided.

Broos, 74, had previously stated that he intended to step down after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with his current contract set to expire at the end of this month. That timeline has fuelled intense speculation over who will lead South Africa into their next campaign.

In recent days, local reports suggested Broos had been offered a 12‐month extension that would keep him in charge through the next Africa Cup of Nations. Those claims were quickly dismissed by the South African Football Association, which issued a statement denying any such agreement.

Confronted by reporters on his return from the FIFA World Cup, Jordaan sharply condemned the reports and ruled out the existence of a new contract.

“Well, one thing I can say is that there is no such thing that SAFA signed a one-year contract with Broos. It doesn’t exist. It’s nonsense,” Jordaan told journalists in a video posted by SABC Sports.

“It’s better that this nonsense is not put out there. I just came back yesterday and I saw this. What is this now? It’s nonsense.”

Jordaan says SAFA ‘have a coach’ but process must run

Pressed on whether Bafana Bafana currently have a head coach in place, Jordaan – visibly irritated by the line of questioning – insisted that SAFA would follow its established procedures before making any announcement on Broos or any potential successor.

“We have a coach and we will deal with it. There is a process,” he said.

“The technical team makes a recommendation to the National Executive Committee. The National Executive Committee finally decides on the coach.

“So you cannot stop me in the street and hijack a decision. It’s not going to happen.

“South Africa must wait. South Africa must understand. The World Cup ended just yesterday.”

Jordaan had only just landed back in the country when he was approached by the media, and he repeatedly stressed that no internal meetings had yet taken place since his return.

As journalists continued to refer to SAFA’s earlier statement rejecting reports that Broos had already departed his post, Jordaan’s frustration spilled over into a tense exchange.

“Then you have your answer, so why are you asking me? Don’t interrupt when I’m talking. No, no, you’re out of order,” he said.

“And you must behave yourself. You can ask your question, but I have just told you we’re having processes and things that must happen. So you must wait.

“I just told you I arrived in the country yesterday from the World Cup. I have not even met anybody from SAFA, but you want the timeline?”

His remarks underline SAFA’s stance that no formal decision on Broos will be taken until the governing body’s internal structures – including the technical committee and National Executive Committee – have met and deliberated.

Broos future unresolved as Mosimane linked

For the moment, Broos’ position remains in limbo, with neither a departure nor an extension officially confirmed. SAFA is expected to follow its normal governance process before clarifying whether the Belgian will continue in the role he has held since 2021.

Should Broos depart, former Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has been widely linked with a possible return to the national team setup. However, SAFA has not commented on any potential candidates, maintaining that all decisions will be channelled through its formal structures before being made public.
