Currie Cup weekend: Cheetahs v Sharks XV top-table clash headlines packed schedule

The Cheetahs’ showdown with the Sharks XV in Bloemfontein and a title decider between SWD Eagles and Valke in George headline a pivotal Currie Cup weekend that features four Premier Division ties and the crowning of the 2026 First Division champions.

The Premier Division’s second round opens on Friday at Toyota Stadium, where early pacesetters Cheetahs host fellow front-runners Sharks XV at 17:00. Both sides started their campaigns with narrow wins, leaving them level at the top of the standings and setting up a heavyweight meeting in Bloemfontein.

The Sharks XV edged past the Pumas 26-24 in their opener, while the Cheetahs squeezed out a 29-27 victory over the Lions, and the Free State side sit first on points scored. With Springbok scrum-half Faf de Klerk pulling the strings at No. 9, the Cheetahs will look to make a statement on home soil.

Recent history between the sides is tight. The Sharks hold a 3-2 edge over the Cheetahs in their last five encounters, but the Cheetahs claimed the most recent clash, grinding out a 7-5 win in Durban in August last year. Another close contest is expected with both sides keen to establish early control of the Premier Division.

First Division title on the line in George

Later on Friday, attention switches to the Currie Cup First Division final at Outeniqua Park, where SWD Eagles, coached by Heyneke Meyer, face the Valke at 19:10 in George, with live coverage on SuperSport.

Both teams built their season on strong SA Cup campaigns earlier in the year. The Eagles finished fifth and the Valke sixth in that competition, narrowly missing out on semi-final places and Premier Division promotion. They carried that momentum into the First Division, where SWD topped the log and the Valke finished third.

The hosts stormed into the final with a comprehensive home semi-final win over the Leopards, crossing for nine tries. The Valke booked back-to-back final appearances with a dominant second-half display in Gqeberha, beating Eastern Province 44-12.

For the Valke, the match offers a chance to erase the pain of their heartbreaking defeat to the Griffons in the 2025 final. SWD, in outstanding form under Meyer, will be aiming to convert their season-long consistency into silverware in front of their own supporters.

Lions and Pumas seek response in Johannesburg

Saturday’s Premier Division action begins at Ellis Park, where the Lions host the Pumas at 15:00, also live on SuperSport. The Lions return home looking to respond immediately after last weekend’s narrow loss to the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

The Johannesburg side have enjoyed the better of this recent rivalry, holding a 4-1 advantage over the Pumas in their last five meetings. The Pumas’ only victory in that run came three years ago in Nelspruit, while last season’s clash at Mbombela Stadium saw the Lions snatch a dramatic 36-35 success.

Griquas and Bulls XV in search of first win

The second match on Saturday sees Griquas welcome the Bulls XV to Kimberley at 17:05. Both teams are still searching for their first Premier Division win of the campaign after opening-round defeats.

As defending champions and on the back of a convincing 42-21 victory over the Bulls XV in Pretoria last season, Griquas are likely to start as favourites at home. However, they will be wary of a Bulls XV side packed with promising young talent and eager to kick-start their season.

Boland and Stormers XXIII chase back-to-back victories

The round concludes on Sunday in Wellington, where Boland host neighbours the Stormers XXIII at Boland Stadium at 15:00, again live on SuperSport. Both teams opened their campaigns with wins and currently occupy third and fourth place on the table.

The Stormers XXIII won this fixture comfortably in Cape Town last season, but coach Stefan Ungerer’s side can expect a far tougher assignment in Wellington. A packed Boland Stadium is anticipated, with home support likely to provide a significant lift for Boland as they look to build on their strong start.
