Kelechi John: Nigerian defender joins Uniao Santarem on free transfer

Nigerian centre-back Kelechi John has joined Uniao Santarem on a free transfer from Sanjoanense, strengthening the Liga 3 side’s defensive options ahead of the new campaign.

The 27-year-old, who plays primarily at the heart of defence, makes the move after a spell with Sanjoanense in Portugal’s CP – Serie B. His switch keeps him in Portuguese football but represents a step up the pyramid as he links up with a club competing in the country’s third tier.

John’s arrival gives Uniao Santarem an experienced option in central defence, with the club acting to bolster their squad depth in a key area of the pitch. The deal, completed without a fee, underlines the club’s focus on adding value in the market without major transfer outlay.

The Nigerian defender had been with Sanjoanense prior to the move, gaining experience in the highly competitive lower divisions of Portuguese football. His performances there have now earned him an opportunity at Liga 3 level as Uniao Santarem reshape their squad.

The transfer was finalised on 23 July 2026, with John now set to begin the next chapter of his career in Santarem after completing his free transfer switch from Sanjoanense.
