Kaizer Chiefs boss Da Cruz hails ‘valuable’ Spain tour as pre-season wraps up

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz says his side’s pre-season camp in Spain has delivered “valuable insights” and clear progress, as the Soweto club returned to South Africa to begin final preparations for the new campaign.

Chiefs spent an intensive spell in Alicante, where the newly appointed Frenchman oversaw three testing friendlies against Rangers FC, Al Kholood and Elche CF as part of his first major assignment since taking charge.

The Glamour Boys recorded back-to-back 1-1 draws against Rangers and Saudi Pro League side Al Kholood before a narrow 2-1 defeat to Spanish La Liga outfit Elche CF rounded off the tour.

Despite the mixed results, Da Cruz was encouraged by how his players coped with both the calibre of opposition and the physical demands of the schedule.

“The conditions at the training camp were very good despite the extreme heat, which affected us in playing three games in the short space of six days,” he told the club’s media team via the Kaizer Chiefs website.

“Nevertheless, we were competitive in these matches against high-level teams, which gave us valuable insights to learn from.

“The attitude and team spirit were excellent, and we have made good progress in our preparations.”

Tactical review under way after European tour

With the squad now back in Johannesburg, the Chiefs technical staff have shifted focus from match action to analysis, going through data and video gathered during the trip.

Coaches and analysts are reviewing performance metrics from the three fixtures in Spain, examining tactical structures, fitness levels and individual contributions as Da Cruz continues to shape his approach ahead of the new Betway Premiership season.

The European tour also gave the new head coach a first extended look at his squad in competitive situations, as he starts to embed his methods and evaluate combinations across the pitch.

Chiefs seek step up after third-place finish

Chiefs ended last season third in the Betway Premiership and are under pressure to convert that platform into a stronger title challenge.

In response, the club’s hierarchy has been busy in the transfer market, moving “aggressively” to strengthen the squad available to Da Cruz.

The Glamour Boys have made a statement by securing the historic signing of Tanzanian international midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko, adding fresh energy and creativity in the middle of the park.

He is joined by fellow new arrivals Siphesihle Ndlovu and defender Sibongiseni Mthethwa, both viewed as important first-team additions intended to deepen competition for places across the squad.

Da Cruz will now look to blend those reinforcements with his existing core, using the lessons from Spain to refine his tactical blueprint and selection choices.
