Rennes send Senegal defender Mikayil Faye on loan to Nürnberg

Stade Rennais have loaned Senegal international Mikayil Faye to German second-division club Nürnberg for the remainder of the season, as the defender looks to revive his career after a difficult spell in France and Italy.

The 22-year-old centre-back, who remains under contract with Rennes until 2028, joins Nürnberg on a season-long loan that includes an option to make the move permanent.

Faye arrived at Rennes from Barcelona in the summer of 2024 in a transfer worth €10 million. The move came after an impressive period with Barcelona’s reserve side, where he developed alongside several of the club’s emerging talents.

However, the defender struggled to establish himself in Brittany. During his time with Rennes, he made 12 appearances but was unable to secure a regular place in the starting line-up.

His campaign was also affected by inconsistent performances, including a costly red card in the derby against Nantes.

In search of more playing time, Faye spent last season on loan at Italian side Cremonese. That move also proved challenging, with the Senegalese defender making only eight appearances during his spell in Italy.

His limited involvement meant he returned to Rennes without significantly improving his chances of breaking into the first team ahead of the new campaign.

With head coach Franck Haise already possessing several options in central defence, Faye was not expected to play a major role this season. A fresh loan move was therefore viewed as the most suitable solution for both the player and the club.

Nürnberg have now offered the former Barcelona defender an opportunity to rebuild his form and gain regular first-team football in Germany’s second tier.

The agreement also includes an option for Nürnberg to complete a permanent transfer if the loan spell proves successful.

For Faye, the move represents another chance to fulfil the promise that earned him a move from Barcelona just two years ago. Although his progress has stalled since leaving Spain, he remains a young defender with time to rediscover his best form.

The coming season could prove significant for his development as he seeks consistent playing opportunities after two difficult campaigns.

Rennes, meanwhile, continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new season, with Faye’s temporary departure reducing competition in central defence while allowing the Senegal international an opportunity to restart his career in a new environment.
