Rani Khedira: Mainz eye move for Union Berlin midfielder in Bundesliga switch

Rani Khedira, the Tunisia and Germany midfielder currently at Union Berlin, is being linked with a move to Bundesliga rivals Mainz as the summer window gathers pace. The 32-year-old defensive midfielder, who has been a regular presence in the German top flight, is viewed as a potential reinforcement in the centre of the park for the Rhineland-Palatinate club.

Khedira is valued at around €2m and any deal would see Mainz move for a player with extensive Bundesliga experience. He has made 287 appearances in Germany’s top division, a level of continuity that is likely to appeal to a Mainz side looking for proven stability in midfield rather than a long-term project.

The right-footed midfielder has been with Union Berlin since July 2021, when he arrived on a free transfer from Augsburg. In that time he has featured in European competition with the capital club, including appearances in the Europa League, the Conference League and the Champions League, underlining his experience beyond domestic football.

Born in Stuttgart and standing at 1.88m, Khedira has also played significant minutes in the DFB-Pokal and lower divisions earlier in his career, but his profile is now defined by his work in the Bundesliga. His current contract situation at Union has prompted speculation over his future, with Mainz monitoring developments as they assess whether to move for a player whose market valuation suggests a relatively affordable addition.
