Swansea beat rivals to land Ghana winger Joseph Opoku in €6m deal

Swansea City have agreed a deal to sign Ghanaian winger Joseph Opoku from Belgian Pro League side Zulte Waregem in a major statement of intent ahead of the new Championship season.

Flashscore reports that the 20-year-old has completed his medical and signed all necessary documents in Austria, where Swansea’s squad are currently conducting their pre-season preparations under head coach Vítor Matos.

Opoku will join the Welsh club on an initial four-year contract, with Swansea holding an option to extend the agreement by another season.

The Championship outfit are expected to pay Zulte Waregem around €6 million for the Ghanaian, with the total package potentially rising beyond €7 million through performance-related bonuses, including clauses linked to Premier League promotion and future Black Stars appearances.

The official announcement of the transfer is expected on Thursday, after which Opoku will link up with his new teammates during Swansea’s pre-season camp.

Swansea win competitive battle for Ghana prospect

Swansea moved quickly to secure Opoku’s signature despite strong interest from several clubs across Europe.

Championship rivals Hull City, Italian Serie A side Genoa, Turkish club Trabzonspor, Russian outfit Krasnodar and La Liga team Real Sociedad had all monitored the winger after his impressive 2025/26 campaign in Belgium.

The deal represents a significant investment in Swansea’s rebuild under Matos, who has been keen to add young, technically gifted players capable of fitting into his possession-based style of football.

Opoku is set to become the club’s fifth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Celtic defender Stephen Welsh, Red Bull Salzburg winger Moussa Yeo, Motherwell forward Elijah Just and Finnish midfielder Leo Walta.

Breakthrough season earns Opoku Championship move

Opoku’s rise has been rapid since moving to Belgium from Ghanaian side Great Corinthians FC in August 2024.

The winger initially joined Zulte Waregem on a two-year deal after impressing during a trial and quickly became a key figure in the club’s promotion-winning campaign. His contributions helped the team secure the 2024/25 Challenger Pro League title and earn promotion to the Belgian top flight.

His performances convinced Zulte Waregem to extend his contract in July 2025, but another outstanding season placed him firmly on the radar of clubs across Europe.

During the 2025/26 campaign, Opoku produced 10 goals and 16 assists, earning him the Jupiler Pro League Player of the Month award for April 2026.

Matos sees Sadio Mane qualities in Ghana winger

Matos is believed to be a strong admirer of Opoku’s ability and sees similarities between the Ghanaian and Liverpool legend Sadio Mane.

The Portuguese coach, appointed by Swansea in November 2025 on a four-year contract, has prioritised signing direct, high-energy wide players who can operate effectively in an attacking possession system.

Opoku, a right-footed winger who mainly plays from the left flank, fits the profile Matos has been searching for.

The move also comes after the winger’s emergence on the international stage. He earned his first Ghana senior national team call-up earlier this year, featuring against Mexico in May, before being named in Carlos Queiroz’s preliminary squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, he narrowly missed out on selection for Ghana’s final 26-man squad for the tournament.

Swansea finished 11th in the Championship last season after Matos replaced Alan Sheehan in November and are aiming for a stronger challenge in the 2026/27 campaign, which begins with a trip to Stoke City on August 15.
