Marcus Rashford: Tottenham line up £40m move as Man Utd block Premier League rivals

Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United future is in serious doubt as the club look to shed his sizeable wages following a successful loan spell at Barcelona – but are reluctant to sell him to a domestic rival.

The 28-year-old England international, who spent last season on loan at the Nou Camp, is wanted by Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth up to £40m, with new Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi viewing him as a key piece to reshape his attack.

Rashford scored 14 goals and provided 10 assists for Barcelona last season, yet the Spanish club opted not to turn the loan into a permanent transfer. That decision has left the forward in limbo, with United keen to cash in to ease their wage bill but struggling to find a destination that satisfies all sides.

United seek sale but resist league rivals

Manchester United’s hierarchy are understood to be open – and increasingly keen – to selling Rashford this summer to reduce their salary commitments.

However, a major stumbling block is the club’s unwillingness to strengthen a direct Premier League competitor. United are wary of the prospect of Rashford rediscovering his top form and punishing them domestically, and therefore have so far resisted entertaining offers from English clubs.

The North London club have already moved to strengthen the squad with the signings of Sandro Tonali, Matheus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke, but are still short of firepower in the final third.

Rashford’s versatility – he can operate both on the wing and as a central striker – makes him an attractive target for De Zerbi, whose attacking style demands fluid movement and pace across the front line. Club officials believe Rashford could make an immediate impact if a deal can be agreed.

A £40m offer is being prepared, but any formal approach would still need to overcome United’s resistance to dealing with domestic opponents.

Player prefers move abroad

While Tottenham’s interest is concrete, Rashford is currently understood to favour a move outside England.

Barcelona are continuing to track his situation after last season’s loan, although they have not yet returned with a firm permanent bid. Their financial constraints remain a factor in any potential agreement.
