Cristiano Ronaldo grants dream of brothers with muscular dystrophy after FIFA staff delivers heartfelt letter

A touching act of kindness during the FIFA World Cup 2026 has led to an unforgettable moment for two young brothers living with muscular dystrophy after Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo signed footballs specially for them.

The remarkable story began during Portugal’s group-stage clash against Colombia in Miami, where FIFA Human Rights and Sustainability Coordinator Alina Hoberg was conducting routine accessibility checks in the stadium.

While assisting fans in the accessible seating area, Hoberg met Michael and Vladimir Berestovsky, two brothers whose lifelong admiration for Ronaldo had inspired them through years of living with muscular dystrophy.

The family handed Hoberg a heartfelt letter explaining the boys’ story and their dream of somehow connecting with the Portuguese superstar.

“I can’t promise anything, but I’m going to try my best,” Hoberg told the family after accepting the letter.

Determined to help, she worked with FIFA colleagues to ensure the letter reached Portugal’s team through FIFA’s Team Services department.

Her efforts paid off.

Following Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Croatia in the Round of 32, Ronaldo signed two footballs for the brothers, which were then transported back to Miami ahead of the World Cup bronze medal match.

The Berestovsky family were invited to attend England’s thrilling 6-4 victory over France without knowing a surprise awaited them.

During the visit, the boys were presented with the signed footballs from Ronaldo, turning a lifelong dream into reality.

The family’s journey has been marked by significant challenges. Both brothers recently underwent leg surgery, while Vladimir, who has idolised Ronaldo since the age of five, continued wearing his hero’s jersey even after losing the ability to walk.

Their mother, Anna Berestovsky, had previously sent letters to several organisations and television stations hoping someone could help fulfil her sons’ dream, but received no positive response.

A chance encounter with a compassionate FIFA official ultimately changed everything.

Inspired by the experience, the family has now launched their own Instagram page, where they hope to encourage children and families facing adversity to keep believing in their dreams.

“This whole thing is really inspirational,” Anna said.

“We want to inspire other families and other kids that dreaming is great, but in order for your dreams to become reality, you need to work hard every day—but keep dreaming. That is very important.”

The story serves as a reminder that football’s greatest moments are not always created on the pitch, but sometimes through simple acts of compassion that leave a lasting impact far beyond the game.
