African coaching icon Faouzi Benzarti begins new chapter with Libyan giants Al-Ittihad

Libyan club Al-Ittihad have appointed veteran Tunisian coach Faouzi Benzarti as their new head coach, ending his latest spell with Club Africain after guiding the Tunisian side to the domestic league title last season.

The appointment marks another chapter in the career of one of Africa’s most successful and experienced coaches, who has collected around 25 major trophies during a managerial career spanning more than four decades.

End of successful spell at Club Africain

Al-Ittihad confirmed Benzarti’s arrival in an announcement on the club’s official Facebook page.

The move brings an end to the 76-year-old’s time at Club Africain, where he not only delivered the Tunisian Premier League title but had also begun preparations for the upcoming campaign before agreeing to the switch to Libya.

One of Africa’s most decorated coaches

Widely regarded as one of the Arab world’s most accomplished managers, Benzarti has enjoyed sustained success across club and international football.

Over a career that began more than 40 years ago, he has won approximately 25 trophies while managing several leading clubs as well as the Tunisian national team, whom he has coached on multiple occasions.

His achievements include domestic league titles and continental honours with clubs in Tunisia, cementing his status as one of African football’s most respected tacticians.

Raja Casablanca run remains historic

Among Benzarti’s most memorable achievements outside Tunisia was his remarkable run with Raja Casablanca at the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup.

The Moroccan giants reached the final of the competition under his guidance, producing one of the greatest achievements by an African club on the global stage before finishing as runners-up.

Al-Ittihad will now hope the experienced Tunisian can bring that wealth of success to Libya as the club looks to compete for major honours in the seasons ahead.
