Al Ittihad appoint veteran Tunisian coach Faouzi Benzarti as new head coach

Libyan club Al Ittihad have appointed experienced Tunisian tactician Faouzi Benzarti as their new head coach, bringing one of Africa’s most decorated managers back into the dugout.

The 76-year-old takes charge of the club following the departure of South African coach Rulani Mokwena, who has left Al Ittihad to become the new head coach of Egyptian giants Pyramids FC.

Benzarti arrives with decades of coaching experience across North Africa, having managed several leading clubs and national teams during a career that has spanned more than four decades.

The Tunisian coach is widely regarded as one of the most successful managers in African football, with a reputation for building competitive teams and delivering trophies.

Throughout his career, Benzarti has handled some of the continent’s biggest clubs, including spells with Wydad AC, Espérance de Tunis, Raja CA and Étoile du Sahel. He has also served as head coach of the Tunisian and Libyan national teams.

His appointment signals Al Ittihad’s ambition to rely on experience and leadership as they prepare for the next phase of their project.

Benzarti’s extensive knowledge of African football is expected to be a key asset as the club seeks greater success domestically and on the continental stage.

Mokwena’s exit marks the end of a short spell at Al Ittihad, with the South African coach now moving to Egypt to lead Pyramids FC.
