Mohammed Mukhtar: Nigeria defender joins Rivers United from Kano Pillars

Nigeria centre-back Mohammed Mukhtar has joined Rivers United from Kano Pillars as the Port Harcourt club reinforce their defence ahead of the new NPFL campaign.

The 22-year-old, a right-footed central defender standing at 1.88m, moves after establishing himself as a regular in the top flight. The transfer is a completed move between two NPFL sides, with no fee disclosed by either club.

Mukhtar arrives at Rivers United with significant domestic experience for his age, having made 61 league appearances and contributed a goal and an assist in the NPFL. He also has continental minutes under his belt, featuring in the CAF Confederation Cup and playing 180 minutes in that competition.

Born on 6 April 2004, Mukhtar began to attract attention during his time with Kanemi Warriors before switching to Kano Pillars in July 2025. His latest move continues a rapid rise through Nigerian club football, taking him to one of the league’s regular contenders in both domestic and continental competitions.

Rivers United have secured a player whose current market value is listed at €50,000, reflecting his growing status in the NPFL. Contract details have not been made public, but Mukhtar’s registration with Rivers United is confirmed from 20 July 2026.

The transfer sees Mukhtar leave Kano Pillars after just over a year to become part of Rivers United’s defensive options for the coming season.
