Dennis Appiah: French-Ghanaian defender returns to SM Caen on free transfer from Saint-Etienne

French-Ghanaian right-back Dennis Appiah has rejoined SM Caen on a free transfer from Saint-Etienne. The 34-year-old defender has completed a permanent move back to the Normandy club, who currently compete in the French third tier.

Appiah leaves Saint-Etienne after spending the second part of his career in the Loire, having arrived there from Nantes in January 2023. His switch to Caen marks another chapter in a long association with the club, which previously signed him twice earlier in his career, including once from Monaco and once from Anderlecht.

Born in Toulouse and standing at 1.79m, Appiah brings extensive experience at the highest level of French and Belgian football. He has made 185 Ligue 1 appearances, as well as featuring in Ligue 2, the Belgian Pro League and European competitions including the Champions League and Europa League. Predominantly a right-back, he has also operated across the defensive line during a career spanning more than a decade.

Appiah’s time away from Caen proved highly successful. He won the French Cup with Nantes in 2021-22, lifted the Ligue 2 title with Monaco in 2012-13 and became Belgian champion with Anderlecht in 2016-17, adding the Belgian Super Cup the following season. He also gained further exposure in European club competitions during his spell in Brussels.

With a current market value of €500,000, Appiah returns to a familiar environment at Caen after his contract with Saint-Etienne ended, signing on a free transfer on 20 July 2026.
