Nsungusi Effiong: Nigerian striker joins East Bengal FC on free transfer from Punjab FC
Nigerian centre-forward Nsungusi Effiong has joined East Bengal FC on a free transfer from Indian Super League rivals Punjab FC.
Effiong, 26, moves within the ISL after leaving Punjab to bolster East Bengal’s attacking options ahead of the new campaign. The deal is a permanent transfer, with no fee involved between the two clubs.
The striker has been playing in the Indian Super League with Punjab FC, and his switch keeps him in the same competition while offering a new stage in Kolkata. His arrival adds depth through the middle of East Bengal’s frontline, with the Nigerian specialising in the centre-forward role.
Effiong’s transfer also represents a notable piece of business within the league, as East Bengal secure a player whose market value stands at around €325,000. The move underlines the club’s intent to strengthen from within the ISL player pool rather than looking exclusively overseas.
Having already adapted to Indian football with Punjab FC, Effiong joins East Bengal with experience of domestic conditions and opposition, reducing the usual adjustment period faced by new foreign recruits. His presence provides an additional option in central areas as East Bengal shape their squad for the challenges of the upcoming season.
The Nigerian forward’s switch from Punjab FC to East Bengal FC is registered as a free transfer and is effective from 17 July 2026.
