RC Lens: Malian defender Souleymane Sagnan extend contract until 2030
Malian defender rewarded after steady progress through the club’s ranks
RC Lens have secured the long-term future of Malian defender Souleymane Sagnan after extending his contract until June 2030.
The agreement reflects the club’s confidence in the 20-year-old, who has emerged as one of the most highly regarded players to come through Lens’ youth system.
Recognised for his defensive strength and composure in possession, Sagnan will now continue his development with the Ligue 1 side under a new long-term deal.
The contract extension follows a period of consistent progress for the young defender, whose performances have strengthened his standing within the club.
Progress through the academy
Before signing his new deal, Sagnan established himself as an important figure for the Lens reserve team in National 3.
His displays at that level earned him opportunities to train alongside the senior squad, bringing him closer to first-team football.
That development was rewarded in March 2025 when he received his first Ligue 1 call-up for Lens’ away fixture against Marseille, marking another significant milestone in his career.
Although still at an early stage of his professional journey, the defender has continued to make steady progress both domestically and internationally.
International recognition
Sagnan’s development has also been recognised by the Malian national team setup.
He represented Mali at the Maurice Revello Tournament in June 2025, where the Eagles finished fifth after a series of competitive performances.
A few weeks later, he made his first appearance for Mali’s Under-23 side, adding further international experience to his growing résumé.
Those opportunities have contributed to his continued progress as one of the country’s emerging defensive talents.
Loan spell strengthened his credentials
To gain regular first-team football, Sagnan spent the 2025-26 season on loan at SM Caen.
The move proved beneficial, with the defender making 17 appearances in Ligue 3 and becoming an important member of the club’s back line.
His performances during that spell reinforced the potential Lens had identified in him and are understood to have played a key role in the club’s decision to secure his long-term future.
The defender is currently valued at €500,000 by Transfermarkt.
For Lens, extending Sagnan’s contract represents an investment in one of the club’s promising young players as he continues his development.
The new agreement provides stability for both the player and the club, allowing him to continue building on the progress made through the academy, his loan experience and his growing involvement with Mali’s national teams.
With his future now committed until 2030, Sagnan will aim to continue his progression and establish himself within Lens’ senior squad in the seasons ahead.
