Christos Retsos: South Africa-Greece midfielder joins Karystos on free transfer from Sciacca

South Africa-Greece midfielder Christos Retsos has joined Karystos on a free transfer from Italian side Sciacca, signing a deal with the Greek club until 30 June 2027.

The 25-year-old central midfielder returns to Greek football after a short spell in Italy, where he moved in December 2025 when he left Reggioravagnese for Sciacca, also on a free transfer. His switch to Karystos was completed on 16 July 2026.

Born in Johannesburg and comfortable using both feet, Retsos is expected to offer versatility in the middle of the pitch for his new club. Standing at 1.73m, he has been used primarily as a central midfielder throughout his career.

Retsos came through the youth ranks at Panionios, breaking into their senior team in 2019 after progressing from the under-19s. He made 41 appearances and scored twice in the Super League U19, before stepping up to first-team football with outings in the Greek Super League 1 and Super League 2, as well as one appearance in the Greek Cup in which he provided an assist.

After leaving Panionios in 2020, he had a series of stints across Greek clubs including Rodos, Kavala, Irodotos, Aris Petroupoli and AE Mykonos, then moved abroad to Italy with Gioiosa and Reggioravagnese before his most recent club Sciacca.

Retsos’ contract with Karystos runs through the 2026-27 season, confirming his latest permanent move back into the Greek game.
