Reyaad Pieterse agree to extend Sundowns contract

Veteran goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse will remain at Mamelodi Sundowns for the upcoming campaign after agreeing to a new one-year contract with the Betway Premiership champions.

The experienced shot-stopper has extended his stay at Chloorkop despite facing an increasingly difficult battle for regular first-team football, choosing continuity over a potential move elsewhere.

Pieterse’s future had been the subject of speculation following the conclusion of last season, with reports suggesting he had the option of seeking a transfer or accepting a loan move in pursuit of more playing time. However, the former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper has instead committed to spending another season with the Tshwane giants.

The decision comes after a campaign in which Pieterse featured just once across all competitions, highlighting the fierce competition for places in Sundowns’ goalkeeping department.

His chances of earning significant minutes this season appear even slimmer following the return of Ricardo Goss from his loan spell at Siwelele FC. Goss’s reintegration into the squad has further strengthened an already formidable goalkeeping unit, leaving Pieterse lower down the pecking order.

Sundowns boast one of the strongest collections of goalkeepers in South African football, with Bafana Bafana number one Ronwen Williams firmly established as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. He is supported by experienced campaigners Denis Onyango and Jody February, while Goss’s return adds another quality option for the technical team.

With those four goalkeepers ahead of him, Pieterse is expected to begin the season as the club’s fourth-choice or fifth-choice option, making competitive appearances difficult to come by.

Since joining Mamelodi Sundowns eight years ago, Pieterse has largely played a supporting role within the squad. Despite his professionalism and experience, he has never managed to feature in more than 10 matches in a single season, often serving as dependable cover whenever called upon.

Nevertheless, the 33-year-old has remained an important figure behind the scenes, providing valuable experience and leadership within the dressing room while contributing to the club’s sustained success over the years.

His decision to stay reflects both his commitment to Sundowns and his willingness to continue competing for opportunities, even in the face of stiff competition from some of the country’s finest goalkeepers.

Although regular game time may once again prove difficult to secure, Pieterse will be hoping to make the most of any opportunities that come his way while helping maintain the high standards that have become synonymous with Mamelodi Sundowns.

With his new deal set to keep him at Chloorkop for another season, the upcoming campaign could prove to be Pieterse’s final chapter at the club as he looks to add more silverware to an already impressive collection before eventually considering the next step in his career.
