English-Nigerian Nathanael Ogbeta seals Maritimo move after Plymouth exit

English left-back Nathanael Ogbeta has secured a fresh start in Portugal after completing a move to CS Marítimo on a two-year contract.

The 25-year-old defender joins the Portuguese side as a free agent following his departure from Plymouth Argyle at the end of his contract in May. His exit brought an end to his time with the Pilgrims, where he became the first signing made by former manager Wayne Rooney.

Ogbeta made 20 appearances for Plymouth after arriving at Home Park but spent the 2024/25 campaign away from the club on loan at Barnsley, gaining further experience in England’s competitive lower divisions.

From Manchester City academy to European adventure

The versatile full-back began his development at Manchester City’s academy before embarking on a career that has taken him across several English clubs.

He has previously featured for Shrewsbury Town, Swansea City, Peterborough United and Bolton Wanderers, building a reputation as a quick and attack-minded defender with experience in both the Championship and League One.

Ogbeta’s career has also included international exposure, having represented England at youth level during his development years.

His arrival is expected to add depth and competition to Marítimo’s defensive options as the club prepares for the new campaign.

Ogbeta joins Marítimo’s pre-season preparations

The defender has already integrated into Marítimo’s squad in Lousada, where the team is continuing preparations ahead of the upcoming season.

The move represents another chapter in Ogbeta’s career as he looks to establish himself outside England and contribute to Marítimo’s ambitions in Portuguese football.

With his blend of Championship experience, youth international background and versatility, the left-back arrives with the profile of a player capable of making an immediate impact.
