Mouine Chaabani to be named Tunisia coach

The Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) has reportedly reached an agreement with Mouine Chaabani to take charge of the Carthage Eagles as the country moves closer to appointing a new national team coach.

Tunisia have been searching for a permanent successor after parting ways with Sabri Lamouchi during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an abrupt end to his time in charge of the national team.

Following Lamouchi’s departure, experienced French coach Hervé Renard was brought in on a short-term basis to guide Tunisia through the remainder of their World Cup campaign. However, after the team’s elimination from the tournament, Renard reportedly decided against extending his stay with the Eagles of Carthage.

With the national team now preparing for the next phase of its development, the Tunisian Football Federation turned its attention towards finding a coach capable of restoring stability and leading the team into future competitions.

According to reports, the federation has identified former Espérance Sportive de Tunis coach Mouine Chaabani as the preferred candidate and has already reached an agreement with the 45-year-old tactician.

Chaabani is currently in charge of Moroccan giants RS Berkane, where he has continued to enhance his reputation as one of North Africa’s most promising coaches.

The Tunisian coach has enjoyed considerable success throughout his managerial career, particularly during his time with Espérance, where he guided the club to major domestic and continental honours.

During his spell with the Tunisian giants, Chaabani led Espérance to back-to-back CAF Champions League triumphs, establishing himself as one of the most successful young coaches in African football.

His tactical knowledge, familiarity with Tunisian football and experience managing at the highest level are believed to have made him an attractive option for the federation as they seek to rebuild the national team.

Chaabani’s current work at RS Berkane has also strengthened his reputation, with the Moroccan club competing strongly under his leadership in domestic and continental competitions.

If the agreement is finalised, Chaabani will return to international management with the responsibility of guiding Tunisia through a new era after a period of uncertainty surrounding the coaching position.

The federation will hope his appointment brings stability and a clear footballing identity to the Eagles of Carthage, who remain one of Africa’s most consistent national teams but have struggled to make a deep impact in recent major tournaments.

While official confirmation is still expected, reports suggest negotiations have reached an advanced stage, with Mouine Chaabani now the leading candidate to become Tunisia’s next head coach.
