Roberto Lopes: Shamrock Rovers and Cape Verde defender linked with shock Sao Paulo move
Roberto Lopes, the Cape Verde and Ireland international centre-back currently with Shamrock Rovers, is being linked with a surprise switch to Brazilian giants Sao Paulo in Serie A.
The 34-year-old defender, valued at around €250,000, has emerged as a potential target following another consistent campaign at the heart of the Rovers back line. Sao Paulo are understood to be assessing experienced, short-term defensive options, with Lopes’ combination of international pedigree and recent European involvement placing him on their radar.
Lopes has been a mainstay for Shamrock Rovers since joining from Bohemians in January 2017 and has helped the Dublin club dominate domestically, most recently adding the 2024/25 League of Ireland Premier Division title to his honours. This season he has remained a regular, contributing three league goals from centre-back, while also featuring in the UEFA Conference League and President of Ireland’s Cup.
On the international stage, Lopes started every match of Cape Verde’s 2026 World Cup campaign, underlining his status as a first-choice defender at tournament level. His performances there have further highlighted his durability and experience to potential suitors.
Lopes’ contract situation at Rovers has not been made public, but his long association with the club and status as a senior figure in the squad mean any formal approach from Sao Paulo would require careful consideration in Tallaght. For now, the interest remains at the rumour stage, with Shamrock Rovers’ captaincy group and coaching staff continuing to rely on him as a central figure in their title defence.
