Malang Sarr: Marseille linked with move for free agent French-Senegalese defender
France-Senegal defender Malang Sarr, currently without a club after leaving Lens, is being linked with a move to Ligue 1 side Marseille.
Sarr, 27, became a free agent on 1 July after his contract with Lens ended, making any deal a potential free transfer. Marseille are understood to be exploring defensive options this summer, with Sarrs profile and top-flight experience in France and Europe placing him among the candidates under consideration.
Born in Nice and a left-footed centre-back by trade, Sarr has amassed 169 Ligue 1 appearances, scoring three goals and providing three assists. His most recent spell in France brought silverware, as he was part of the Lens side that lifted the Coupe de France in the 2025-26 season.
Sarrs career has also included stints with Chelsea, Porto and Monaco, where he gained further experience in the Champions League and Europa League. He was part of Chelseas squad that won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2022, adding a major international club trophy to his honours.
With his market value most recently assessed at 20m but no transfer fee required, Sarr represents a relatively rare combination of prime-age experience and immediate availability. Marseille, who are looking to strengthen for the new Ligue 1 campaign, are monitoring the situation, but no formal agreement has yet been reached and discussions remain at an exploratory stage.
For now, Sarr continues to assess his options as a free agent, with Marseille among the leading clubs credited with interest in securing his next move.
